It had been one whole moon since their first training session in the Clan inlands so far they had covered much in the basics and thankfully their relationship had grown a bit stronger since their first little tiff. Sandpaw seemed almost desperate that she wanted to do well and her fighting warrior spirit never failed to impress him. She was a brilliant hunter (perhaps the best he had trained in a while) and showed more willing to go through his battle training now that she was more on foot with his methods, not complaining even once when she returned to camp bruised and sore while expecting to go out and hunt. Yes, she was becoming a brilliant she-cat with a bright future yet her downfall would always be the same. That niggling doubt and fear carved into her soul was like a poison and he had yet to ease the venom out even a little bit so even if her skills outmatched any of the apprentices, she wasn’t even half the apprentice she could be of she let go of that pain.
His claws unsheathed as he flexed them thoughtfully. He hadn’t even bothered to shield himself from her this time as she always managed to find him and he found it a tiresome now to even try so he had found himself a place to relax in the shade while awaiting her arrival. He grinned to himself, he had guarded his trail well but it would only be a matter of moments before the tabby monster would be upon him, expecting the old cat to pounce and attack but not today as he had a slightly bigger challenge for her - and that was to climb this tree. If she failed to get past the third branch quicker than she would catch a rabbit then he would follow her and drag her down. Even from a distance above Hawkclaw was a vicious enemy to face if you’re solely on the receiving end of his wrath.
ooc;; Sorry about the crappy post! My staring muse has run out of juice XD

Sandpaw wandered around, following her mentor's trail, which he had carefully tried to hide. Hawkclaw seemed to enjoy this, trying to hide his trail so she'd have a harder time finding him. At first, she was horrible, taking to long and sometimes, she lost track completely. However, after a whole moon of training with Hawkclaw, Sandpaw knew his scent as if it were as strong as a badgers. Not that she'd ever compare Hawkclaw to a badger, well, not out loud anyways.
Shaking her head, Sandpaw continued to follow the trail Hawkclaw left; her paws just following the scent without much effort put into it. Her mind then wandered to their very second training session; it was much more memorable than the first. She had told him her answer, and here they were now. Mentor and apprentice; apprentice and mentor. They hadn't really had much of an argument since then, and for that, Sandpaw was grateful. The night after their first training session, Sandpaw was tossing and turning all night; unable to just lay down, relax and sleep. She didn't like the feeling of Hawkclaw doubting her, or even Hawkclaw angry at her. It made her feel as if she was doing something wrong, even if it was right.
Unknowingly, she arrived at the area where Hawkclaw was, but her mind was still somewhere else, heading back to the insecure feelings that plagued her ever since she could remember. Kinktail did nothing to help it, but made it even worse. Flamepaw's disappearance didn't help either, it made her feel abandoned. She really was though; everyone she loved had left her, some way or another. She hated it. Suddenly, her paws stopped, unconsciously as she stood in front of Hawkclaw. Feeling herself stop, Sandpaw blinked in surprise, Hawkclaw right in front of her.
Sandpaw almost yowled, but held it in and jumped back, a crouched position as she watched her mentor with sorry eyes. "S-sorry Hawkclaw, I was thinking about something. I won't let it happen again." she apologized, her mew quiet and soft. Once she noticed Hawkclaw hadn't decided to hide himself, as his scent didn't travel to the undergrowth and back, Sandpaw stood up, her head tilted questionably. "What am I going to do today then?" Obviously, Hawkclaw wasn't planning on battle training, otherwise he'd have already attacked her, and he wasn't planning on hunting training, seeing as this wasn't really the type of place to hunt. So what was her mentor planning for today? Something gnawed at her belly, as she glanced around her, her gaze landing on the tall tree a few fox-lengths away. Gulping, Sandpaw turned towards her mentor, wide yet determined eyes. She was going to do this; she didn't spend one month training to turn tail out of anything.

As expected, Sandpaw did not take long to find him but in total honesty she didn’t really ‘find’ him - more stumbled across him unknowingly while following his familiar scent. Had he intended to teach her combat skills then she would have been put to the earth by this point but luckily she had escaped his fierce attacks this time. He frowned at the young she-cat, his eyes narrowing with disapproval at her dozy entrance but he said nothing knowing that she would admit this mistake before it left his mouth. “Learn from your mistakes in the future.” he said roughly with a dismissal flick of his long striped tail. The hot day bothered him as the sun clung to his dark coat from which there was no escape yet the rain which he normally loved was starting to act on his joints which was never a good sign. He sheathed his claws and studied her form - she-cats always had the climbing advantage with their lithe bodies and light weight and Sandpaw was no exception and her small shape would easily manage this feat if she got her eye-paw coordination right.
It occurred to him how much she had changed physically since their first training session. Having spent every day of the last moon with her at his side did not make him appreciate how finely she was changing to suit the Warrior lifestyle. Her coat was shedding its kitten fluff making it soft but hardy against the elements and like his it was a striking tabby coloured though not as dark as his own. Her legs had become long and agile and her ears were slowly becoming smaller to suit her rounded face - truly she was becoming a nice looking cat by all standards and soon she would be taking less interest in her duties and more on the local toms. It was always past the sixth moon… perhaps one of the Queens would explain this to her before it happened. For now the apprentice watched him with a pure expression of determination as she clocked onto today’s assignment. He grumbled appreciatively that he would not have to explain it in too much detail.
“Today I will teach you climbing… not that we need it much in our territory however it is in its own right invaluable if you’re ever being chased. Badgers and foxes are excellent diggers and will dig you out of any hole in a matter or heartbeats however their claws are like dogs so they cannot climb like we do.” Extending his claws in demonstration he emphasized their uses by scraping the ground in front of him, dragging back to him old, dead grass and smaller stones. “… they will also aid you when hunting on foreign territory, escaping floods and of course being kept unseen. What I want you to do today is climb that tree over there.” He nodded in the direction of the large sycamore which towered over them even from a distance with all its new-leaf glory. “Climb that tree past the third branch and you will be considered done. Climb higher then I will consider you one with StarClan… Don’t reach the third branch by the time I circle then I will drag you back down and fight you while you try.” He meowed and arched his back in an almighty stretch. “Your time starts when you first step paw on the bark then I will start moving.”

Sandpaw nodded, her eyes focused on the tree in front of her. Hawkclaw's warning was clear; she needed to learn to climb a tree, fast. With a deep breath, Sandpaw padded toward the Sycamore tree, stopping a few fox lengths away. Taking one last glance at her mentor, Sandpaw's eyes flashed as she bounded towards the tree, as fast as she could go. Once she was close enough, she leaped up; getting rid of the first few lengths quickly with that once leap. Her eyes focused solely on the third branch; the branch she had to reach. She heard Hawkclaw behind her, and she quickened her pace; her small, lithe body moving quickly and smoothly as she climbed.
Her ears were pricked, on alert for any noise Hawkclaw could possible make. By now, she was moving towards her second branch, her legs crouched close as she moved higher. However, as she went to move onto her second branch, Sandpaw felt her grip slipping, or rather, she had chosen the wrong place to go. The bark was weak, it was smoother than the other areas on the tall tree. Fighting to stay on the tree, while moving farther up away from her mentor, Sandpaw gripped her forepaws tightly against the tree, and she kept her hindpaws as tight against the tree as possible. Right before she bolted herself up, with a mighty push of her hindpaws.
There was one problem, however, just as she neared her goal. Her claws couldn't get a good enough grip onto the bark, and she was sent falling towards the ground. It hurt less than she expected, probably because she wasn't as high as she thought; but it stunned her nonetheless. She landed painfully on her side, a pained yowl coming from her. She remained on the ground for a while, waiting for her senses to come back to her. They did, slowly, but they returned nonetheless. Trying to stand up, Sandpaw wobbled, unsteady on her paws for a heartbeat, before she steadied herself. Her eyes were closed, as dizziness overcame her; however, as it disappeared, her eyes opened, full of determination.
'Figures you would've fallen on your first try. Pathetic.' Sandpaw crouched down, her eyes focused on the tree, yet her body in tune with her surroundings. "Come on Sandpaw. Fall, and get up and try again. Try, try again." she murmured to herself, before breaking into a run, much like last time. 'Pathetic. You'll fall again. And again. And again.' it taunted her, trying to make her fall. Sandpaw continued, her lithe body moving up the tree quickly. Her ears open, and her eyes determined. She passed the second branch, 'Maybe, maybe I'll fall and fall again. But I'll always get up, and try and try again. Try until I get it right!'
[ Notes: ] Perhaps Hawkclaw can get her before she reaches the third branch, or something? I wouldn't want her to reach the branch yet, but I wouldn't want her to fall on her own again. ^^' Hope that's fine.
